Period Streets, Laid Fast & Lifted Without a Trace.
Location and art department teams come to us when a modern street needs to look like 1770s Philadelphia, 1920s Birmingham or pre-war Munich. We lay specialist materials over the existing tarmac, age and distress them to camera, and make sure they stand up to vehicles, crowds and horse-drawn carriages.
When the shoot wraps, the surface comes up with mechanical sweepers and the road is left exactly as we found it. We’ve done it across Liverpool for productions from Peaky Blinders to Outlander – and we know how tight a shooting schedule can be.

Specialist Film and Television Production Surfacing in Liverpool
Alpha Surfacing Ltd provides specialist film production surfacing services in Liverpool, Merseyside and across the wider North West. Working alongside film crews and production teams, we help transform modern streets and existing road surfaces into convincing settings for film and television. From historical streets requiring an aged, traditional appearance to surfaces prepared for contemporary productions, our experience in asphalt and tarmacadam allows us to support a variety of on-location filming requirements.
Authentic Period Road Surfacing for Film and Television
Creating a believable historical setting requires attention to the details that bring a production to life. Modern road surfaces can look out of place in period dramas, particularly when filming scenes set decades or centuries in the past. Alpha Surfacing uses specialist-grade surfacing materials to help recreate the worn appearance of traditional roads and streets, allowing production teams to transform existing locations without necessarily having to construct entirely new sets. Our work has helped bring historical settings to life for productions including Peaky Blinders, Outlander and Victoria.
Transforming Modern Streets into Film Sets
Liverpool offers a variety of architectural settings for film and television, but modern roads and surfaces do not always match the period or location being represented on screen. Our film set surfacing services help address this challenge by adapting existing tarmacadam surfaces to suit the visual requirements of a production. Whether a street needs to resemble 1920s Britain, 18th-century Philadelphia or pre-war Europe, we can discuss the appropriate surfacing approach based on the location, filming requirements and desired finish.
Specialist Surfacing Materials for Production Requirements
Every film and television production has its own practical and visual considerations. The choice of materials, preparation methods and finished appearance must be suitable for the location and the scenes being filmed. Alpha Surfacing draws on its experience in asphalt surfacing and resurfacing to help deliver tailored solutions for production teams. From creating aged road finishes to preparing surfaces for specific set requirements, we work to understand the brief and plan the work around the needs of each project.
Temporary Surfacing and Post-Production Removal
Film production surfacing often needs to be temporary, allowing modern streets and roads to be adapted for filming and subsequently returned to their previous appearance. Alpha Surfacing has experience using specialist materials that can be removed when production is complete, including projects where mechanical sweepers have been used to clear the temporary surface treatment. We can discuss the proposed installation, filming schedule and removal requirements at the outset, helping production teams plan the work around the wider demands of filming on location.
